Visitor Centre and exhibition opening hours

Tickets must be purchased from the box office at the Visitor Centre in the Cuenca Tourist Office (Calle Alfonso VIII, 2, 16001 Cuenca).

Monday through Sunday, 10 am–8 pm

The opening hours of the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español are as follows:
Tuesday through Friday, 11 am–2 pm and 4–6 pm
Saturdays, 11 am–2 pm and 4–8 pm
Sundays, 11 am–2.30 pm
Closed on Monday

The exhibition will be closed on the following days: December 24, 25 and 31, 2018 and January 1, 2019

The exhibition Bill Viola – Vía Mística aims to offer visitors a calm, leisurely, thoughtful, and contemplative experience. It is therefore essential to maintain an atmosphere of peace and quiet inside the exhibition venues.

This museum occupies a significant portion of the buildings known as the “Hanging Houses”, the quintessential urban symbol of the city of Cuenca.

Its founder, Fernando Zóbel, wanted to display his private art collection (a veritable treasure trove of the latest innovations in Spanish contemporary art) in this spectacularly situated architectural setting, some parts of which are over half a millennium old. The result, a shining symbol of the modern spirit of an era, has become an international artistic landmark admired by all, orchestrating an exquisite alliance between past and present.

This singular building, which dates back to the late 15th century, was created by connecting several old houses to form an intricate yet stunningly lovely maze of rooms on different levels. The structure is spectacularly perched on the cliffs overlooking the Huécar river gorge, thus facilitating the seamless integration of the natural landscape with the visitor’s experience inside its halls.

This museum of Spanish abstract art also has temporary exhibition rooms which regularly host shows featuring artists represented in the collection, as well as projects dedicated to contemporary creators and the most important modern movements.

2 Cruz Novillo Art School

The former Convent of Las Angélicas is a 16th-century building adjoining the Church of San Nicolás de Bari, founded by Knight Commander Constantino del Castillo in 1561. Today it houses the Cruz Novillo Art School.

The adjacent church has been turned into an exhibition hall. It is a small building with a single nave and a coffered ceiling vault whose central axis is decorated with religious paintings. In the apse, decorative plasterwork frames the old devotional niches and doorways, and a small fantail arches over the area where the altar once stood.

The main entrance features a Gothic portal with large voussoirs forming a semicircular arch. This church was destroyed in the Spanish Civil War, and during its restoration the original wooden ceiling was covered up, although there are plans to recover it.

3 Church of San Miguel

The Church of San Miguel, formerly a Catholic house of worship, is now used for concerts and cultural events. The church stands on a platform in the gorge of the River Júcar, by the old defensive wall, and is one of the oldest parish churches in the city.

It was probably built in the 13th century and has a very simple structure: a stone nave with a wooden ceiling, a semicircular apse and a tower at the foot.

A second nave was added on the north side in the 15th century, also with a Mudejar coffered ceiling. The apse end of the church underwent extensive remodeling in the 16th century, a project in which Esteban Jamete and master stonemason Pedro de Yrízar were both involved. The oval dome, designed by Jamete, is decorated with floral motifs. Radical alterations were made to the church in the 18th century. The original wooden ceilings over the naves were replaced, in the main nave by a barrel vault with lunettes, and in the side nave by a new groin vault resting on double pilasters. Rocaille decoration discreetly embellishes the barrel vault arches, the corners of the lunettes and the center of the vaults.

The lower section of the portal probably dates from the 18th century. Made of rusticated stone, it was reduced to a semicircular arch between pilasters nearly flush with the wall. The upper part has a central niche framed by double Ionic pilasters and curious images of donors in the end niches.

4 Church of San Andrés

Built in the 16th century, this church has a trapezoidal floor plan due to the shape of the plot on which it stands.

The nave is divided into three sections by engaged columns along the wall. The location of the sacristy behind the altar is quite unusual, forcing the architect to sever the pillar, which rises from a corbel resting on slender molding.

In the first section, Plateresque arches of very simple lines flank the nave on both sides; these are framed by recessed-panel pilasters with grotesques on the capitals and lobed flowers, mirrors, and other Renaissance motifs in the spandrels. In the late 17th century, arches were added to the presbytery; though empty today, they once held Baroque altarpieces.

The portal is a well-balanced composition, although the destruction of the jambs has damaged its proportions. The structure is conceptually quite sophisticated, designed as a small temple over a doorway.

The surrounding square is quiet and quite charming, although the steep incline can make it rather difficult for pedestrians to navigate.
